What Is Tenacity?

Tenacity is one of the champion statistics in League of Legends. It is also known as crowd-control (cc) reduction.

Crowd control reduction, or tenacity, reduces the duration of crowd control effects. It affects most crowd control effects, but it does not affect displacements, suppression, and stasis.

The stat is the percentage that the effect duration is reduced and is calculated at the time of application. This means that changing your tenacity after being affected by crowd-control won’t change the effect's duration. The reduction cannot be decreased to below 0.5%, meaning that it cannot nullify the effects.

Tenacity’s Patch History

Tenacity was exclusive to Mercury’s Treads at the beginning of the game. At this time, it remained unnamed. It only became a statistic in a later patch.

Tenacity was changed back to an item effect in the item overhaul of Season 3. This was quickly reverted in patch 3.01. This patch also changed cc reduction to tenacity.

How to Increase Tenacity

You can increase tenacity a number of ways. This includes with items, champion abilities, summoner spells, and runes.

  • Elixirs:

  • Elixir of Iron

  • Items:

  • Mercury’s Treads
  • Sterak’s Gage

  • Runes:
    • Unflinching
    • Legend: Tenacity

  • Summoner spells:

  • Cleanse

  • Champion abilities:

  • Dr. Mundo’s
  • Burning Agony
  • Garen’s
  • Courage

How Do They Stack?

Certain item / ability combos stack tenacity additively, others multiply the effect.

The combinations that stack additively are:

  • Elixer of Iron with Unflinching’s 10%/20% bonus

  • Mercury’s Treads with Sterak’s Gage

  • Burning Agony / Courage with Brittle and Unflinching’s 15% bonus

All other combos will stack tenacity with multiplication.

How to Reduce Tenacity

You can reduce tenacity to a negative value. This causes crowd control to have a longer duration.

There is only one way to reduce the tenacity of a champion as of December 2019:

  • Ornn’s Bellows Breath and Call of the Forge God abilities apply the brittle effect. This effect applies -30% tenacity and increased knock-up duration.

How Much Tenacity Can I obtain?

The maximum tenacity that can be acquired is 98.652%.

This is achieved by stacking the following on Garen:

  • Courage
  • Unflinching
  • Elixir of Iron
  • Cleanse
  • Legend: Tenacity
  • Sterak’s Gage
  • Mercury’s Treads

This amount of tenacity can only be achieved for a short amount of time, due to many of the buffs being temporary.

Is Tenacity Useful?

Yes.

Tenacity is fantastic when you are playing one of the champions with a kit built around crowd control (cc).

Having high tenacity against cc champions messes with their judgment.

The game's strongest and longest-lasting airborne effects are also paired with stuns. This means high tenacity negates the majority of the ability’s effects.

You can shut down a lot of popular crowd control champions with the right tenacity build, which can make all the difference for your team.

There is plenty of popular tenacity champion builds to play. Leona, Garen, Lee Sin and more all have online tenacity builds available. You can copy and adapt these builds for your own game, and hopefully increase that precious ELO in the process.
